How Hydrogen Power Works — The DC-Native Energy Chain
Solar panels generate native DC electricity. Surplus energy beyond immediate building needs goes to the electrolyser instead of being wasted or curtailed.
DC SourceThe electrolyser uses DC electricity to split water (H₂O) into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen. It runs directly off the DC bus — no AC conversion needed. ~50 kWh produces 1 kg of hydrogen.
DC InputCompressed hydrogen is stored in on-site tanks. Unlike batteries, hydrogen can store energy for weeks or months without degradation — making it ideal for long-duration backup and seasonal storage.
Long-Duration StorageThe fuel cell combines hydrogen with oxygen in a silent, emission-free electrochemical reaction — producing DC electricity, water, and heat. Output feeds directly into the building's DC bus. No inverter. No conversion loss.
Native DC OutputFuel cells output direct current. This means a hydrogen fuel cell plugs directly into your DC bus — alongside solar and battery — with no inverter, no rectifier, and none of the 5–15% conversion losses that AC buildings incur every time they use hydrogen power.
Lithium batteries provide 4–8 hours of backup. Hydrogen provides weeks or months. For critical facilities — hospitals, data centres, airports, military installations, government complexes — hydrogen is the only technology that delivers true energy independence.
When green hydrogen (produced from solar or renewable electricity) is used in a fuel cell, the only byproduct is pure water. No CO₂, no NOx, no particulates. The cleanest power generation technology available today — and future-proof against carbon pricing.
NTPC commissioned India's first solar–hydrogen–battery microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh (Nov 2025) — 3.7 MW solar, PEM electrolyser, hydrogen storage, and 200 kW fuel cell. Operating at –40°C at 4,500m altitude. The technology works in India's most extreme conditions.
Green hydrogen currently costs $6–8/kg. With India's National Green Hydrogen Mission targeting $1/kg by 2030, the economics for commercial buildings will become compelling well before 2030 — especially for high-value, large-scale projects.
Solar is intermittent — it generates peak power at midday but nothing at night or in monsoon season. Hydrogen solves this perfectly: excess solar DC power makes hydrogen during the day, and fuel cells return that energy as DC whenever the sun isn't shining. True 24/7 solar power.
This is one of the most powerful benefits of DC infrastructure that is rarely articulated: a DC building designed today requires zero additional electrical redesign to add hydrogen power tomorrow. The fuel cell's DC output connects directly to the same DC bus that carries solar and battery power. An AC building, by contrast, would require a complete power architecture redesign.
